Chapter 14

By the time we made it back to the farmhouse, getting in to see Gray at the jail was the least of my worries. That’s because when we got there, it was to find Gray, Trevor, and Patty all in the house waiting for us.

“You could have called to let me know, you know.”

Trevor grinned at me. “And ruin the surprise? No way.” Then his grin faded a bit. “Besides, I didn’t want to interrupt your interview. Did you get anything?”

“Oh, yeah.” Ruby beat me to it. “We got plenty.” She glanced at Kim who was sitting on the sofa all snuggled up to her man. Pearl was in his lap and Mason was sitting on his other side. Tell me they weren’t a family now. Just tell me that. “Like that woman who came into the shop and tried to tell you that Gray was her man? She has a fiancé!”

Kim’s mouth dropped open. “She has a what?”

“A fiancé. We met him today. Lucas Whitlock.”

What worried me was that Gray didn’t seem to be too overly thrilled to learn that Cyndy had moved on. Or, just maybe, he wasn’t all that thrilled about who she’d moved on with?

“Lucas Whitlock?” he asked, shaking his head. “Oh, how the mighty have fallen.”

“Care to explain that comment?” I asked.

He seemed to regret his words now, but they were already out there. Time to explain them. I wasn’t going to just let them pass.

Gray took a deep breath. “No way did the two of them have Madden’s blessing. He thought Lucas was a bit too dim in the smarts department to make a good alpha. For his part, Lucas was determined to win him over with his fighting ability. Lucas just can’t grasp the fact that being an alpha is about more than strength. You have to be able to protect the pack by every means. That includes mental strength as well as physical.”

“Would she have married him without her father’s blessing?” Kim asked.

Gray hesitated. “I’d have to say no. She stands to become the female alpha of the pack, but the pack is pretty set in its ways. The alpha female is supposed to be mated to the alpha male. A power couple if ever there was one.”

“And Madden could have stopped Lucas from becoming alpha?”

“Oh, heck yeah.” That came from Patty, not Gray. “First of all, I’m not part of that pact, just so you know. My pack is much smaller... and more spread out. Their pack has gotten a bit, well, inbred, if you ask me. They are almost a joke to the rest of us.”

Makes sense then as to why Gray wasn’t so fond of the idea of being a part of it. Also made sense as to why Madden was so eager to change his mind about that. Fresh blood with Alpha ancestry? Gray would have made a fine match for Cyndy Madden indeed.

Too bad for them, he’d fallen for Kim instead.

“Am I right in assuming that now Whitlock’s chances are greater at reaching his goal?” Trevor asked.
